Turning Finance pros into transformation champions

Working out how to train & coach a team to drive success

The background

An ambitious, fast-growing, and profitable firm formed from global acquisitions faced cost challenges due to fragmentation and disparate systems.  They acknowledged they had a poor track record of delivering change projects.  They struggled with initiating change and wanted to build a network of leaders to drive business transformation.

The challenge

  1. To assess how well Finance professionals could design and deliver change today
  2. To identify actionable feedback and the future development needs for the team
  3. To manage expectations about the pace of future change delivery

Our solution

  1. Delivered a 4-Day Transformation Health check:
    • Assessed project methodology—found gaps vs. best practice.
    • Conducted 13 interviews across key Finance, Change team and L&D teams to understand capability, gaps and development needs
    • Applied our best practice principles of leading change to evaluate their approach objectively
  2. Defined a tailored 6-Month On-the-Job Training Program – averaged about a day per week (c. 35 days)
    • Designed a flexible curriculum based on best practice change & project management, dovetailed with existing in-house training.
    • Topped up with blended theory-practical sessions, applying learning to real challenges faced by the finance team in defining transformation
    • Supported by situational coaching from an experienced change leader

Key Outcomes of the Transformation Health Check

  • Recommendations to improve the quality of existing materials to give a focus on momentum and progress.
  • Developed practical, personalised solutions and on-the-job training to quickly upskill the team
  • Established strong chemistry and collaboration with the team
  • Offered a cost-effective solution to drive a step-change in business transformation capabilities.

Here’s some of the feedback from the training and coaching

  • Rapport was very much there from the start – I valued the fact that Paul had been in our position before
  • He helped me to think about the things we are trying to do in a way I’ve never thought of before – gently challenging in a non-obtrusive way
  • Paul has no idea quite how good at this he actually is
  • He is so effective, but it was great fun and hugely rewarding.  I feel like I’m writing on the back of his book!
