Supporting finance leaders to deliver change

How we helped a group of Finance professionals with limited business transformation experience to define their own Finance transformation with some simple training and ongoing coaching support

The background

  • Our client is a profitable business built up from global acquisitions. The CEO felt their growth was restricted and was looking to transform the business. The CFO wanted to identify leaders to drive the change for the Finance team.
  • Like many organisations built on acquisitions, the organisation was fragmented across many countries with disparate systems. Change was hard to initiate and even harder to deliver, and this was holding the Finance team back.
  • Finance had a track record of failing to deliver transformation and very limited experience of good project management.

The challenge

  • To mobilise a team of Finance professionals to design and deliver change to their function.
  • To deliver tailored ‘training’ to equip the team with the skills they needed to design the business change themselves.
  • To provide ongoing 1-1 project coaching support to embed the learning and help the team to deliver change at pace.

Our solution

  1. We developed a simple curriculum of ‘best practice’ change and project management topics which we fine-tuned with the in-house L&D team – and we added more topics along the way based on feedback from the team and observing the accelerating rate of progress which revealed gaps to be plugged.
  2. We ran a series of working sessions where we blended the theory with practical working sessions using the specific challenges the team faced to embed the theory in ‘business as usual’ (BAU).
  3. We supplemented this with ongoing ‘situational coaching’ support delivered by experienced leaders of change who shared their experience with the Finance team.

Outcomes we helped achieve

  • Transformed the way the Finance team think about change – focussing on broader holistic outcomes rather than individual projects.
  • Embedded the business transformation theory into their BAU approach with ongoing 1-1 coaching support.
  • Switched their approach from basis governance to a balanced view of momentum and progress.
  • Delivered a demonstrable step change in transformation capabilities.

Here’s some of the feedback from the training and coaching

  • 3D Projects created a really clear framework for us to guide and lead projects to success
  • Now we understand what we need to do, before the project starts
  • Helped us to carve out time for high quality discussions
  • Used nice simple models for theory which we could deploy easily
  • Provided a safe space for me to test and develop my thinking,
  • Helped me to try out different approaches to different situations
  • Challenged me to explore
